Eternal

She tried to stop the child’s screaming;
He’d seen too much.
She covered his eyes and blocked his ears,
But it still didn’t help.
The image wouldn’t erase from his mind.
His skin turns red as blood peeks out of his pores
His fingers and toes decayed.
The women held onto her son for she knew this is not the
Way he should leave the Earth.
He begged his mother to stop the pain, but what could she do?
He told her to throw him out the window and into the ocean.
He needs to wash his sins away,
The bed drench of his blood and his heart stop
And he fell into the ocean.
The clouds opened.

This feels like a great poem but when I read it it left me with a lot of questions. Is the child dying, what from and why? What message is bring brought across? I like the approach but I dont feel the poem reached the climax.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
