Friend

The smiles still come
in teethy grin.
Suffocating at times it seems
but still welcome to heart.
She waits like a matador
ready to stab my bullish heart
at opportune times
and makes her wait seem kind, so kind.
Unholy thoughts
cannot abide
anywhere around her.
She is pure and chaste.
Invincible;
she raises her shield
to defend nothing.
Nothing comes.
The night pours in
like coal dust.
She waits and stalks
anyone within reach.
Effervescent smiles, longing fingers,
and weighty toes
cling to my soul like cats on a tree.
The sheets stretch to the limit.
I stand back and watch
like a historian.
I don’t care
to interfere
with her charade.
 I am not a part
but apart and
it is fun to watch
for amusement.
Life is such a superb part
of nature,
especially if life’s amusement
is a friend.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
