I just stood in the doorway

I just stood in the doorway

    I want the dirt bank
    that we found coal in
and convinced ourselves that if we
    dug a little further
    we would find diamonds

Watching you sit on my gray couch,
your husband's arm around your shoulder,
I see how we have grown

    past pretending to be
    Thunder and Lightning,
best friend horses divided by a continent.
    You drive trucks cross-country
and I work at a grocery store.

I want to lie on my front lawn.
    Shine flashlights at the sky.
We were eight, trying to direct
    airplanes or communicate with aliens.
You are here only for a few days,
but already I am ten years old
again asking you to make snow angels.

Childhood soon gives ways to only memories and the child gets buried inside. I think I will let mine out to play a while. 10 from me thanks for memories

Childhood is fleeting, but the feelings we hold for the ones that were there, are forever. A very special thinking poem..........................g

Memories of a child and how they relate and how they are similar to your observations today.

    nice content and structure

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
