    It Hurts

I know why you are gone,
But it hurts just the same,
    You are the dutiful son,
In action, not just in name

I miss you so very much,
Not seeing you when I awake,
Longing at night for your touch,
Is probably more than I can take,

I know you've only been gone a couple of days,
The minutes that tick by seem like eternity,
Hours stretch long into a blurry haze,
Wondering how long until you return to me,

I realize your family needs you right now,
And sharing is the least I can do,
I'll get through these days somehow,
Because I know your love for me is true,

So my love, I will sit and wait,
for you to return to our loving place,
To take your stand beside me as my mate,
It will be heaven to once again kiss your face.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
