my child

IF I COULD HAVE ONE DREAM
ANY DREAM AT ALL
THAT ONE DREAM WOULD BE
THAT YOU NEVER HAVE TO FALL
IF I COULD HAVE ONE WISH
A WISH OUT OF THE SKY
THAT ONE WISH WOULD BE
THAT YOU NEVER HAVE TO CRY

IF I COULD HAVE ONE REQUEST
ONE REQUEST OUT OF ANY
THAT ONE REQUEST WOULD BE
THAT YOUR DAY IS NEVER CLOUDY

IF I COULD HAVE ONE PRAYER
ONE PRAYER OUT OF COUNTLESS
THAT ONE PRAYER WOULD BE
THAT YOU NEVER SIT IN BLACKNESS

IF I COULD HAVE ONE PETITION
ONE PETITION OUT OF SEVERAL
THAT ONE PETITION WOULD BE
THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS TRUTHFUL

IF I COULD GIVE YOU THE ANSWER
THE ONE ANSWER THAT IS CASUAL
THAT ONE ANSWER WOULD BE
THAT LIFE IS ALL NATURAL

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA
