    No Going Back

The past is a distant memory,
    the future uncertain.
I try to live in the now,
but past lies and disappointments interfere.
I want to recapture what I thought we once had.
I'm tire of being taken for granted,
tired of being placed on the back burner,
and tired of not feeling alive when I'm with you.
I've built a wall around myself
to prevent you from hurting me any further.
I've stopped expecting you to change,
stopped expecting to be treated as
the special person I know I am.
If it ends I will feel no sense of regret
because I know that it wasn't my lies
    that brought everything crashing down.
I don't know what the future holds for us,
don't know if there will be an us.
What I do know is that I deserve better
and I won't settle for anything less.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
