    NO-THING'S THERE

There's an object standing in front of you
    or though it may appear
But if you stop to contemplate
you'll find it is not there.

For as you look the seer sees
    a picture in your mind
A concept of a thing out there
is all that you can find.

I bet you'll say, no here it is,
and pick it up to show
but that's a feeling in your hand
    that's all you really know.

Just a minute I hear you say
    what trickery this ruse
I can not bear to think these thoughts
my mind I'm sure to lose.

But as all things must come and go
    true comfort you will find
your not your feelings or your thoughts
not your body nor your mind.

Don't be alarmed, I'll tell you why
    there's nothing you should fear
    you are the very consciousness
in which all you know appears.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
