Poem Commentary

I had just read the life of St. Matushka Olga Michaels of Alaska. It said for her burial, in November when the ground is frozen, for her, god granted the ground to be soft so her grave could be dug. The warm breeze unfroze the river so many of her friends could come to the service; when her friends had gone back across the river, it refroze.

One

If
I asked the earth
To open and receive me
Would you catch me
Before I fall?
No, you would fall short.
Can you
Satisfy the hunger that consumes me?
Or, are you a mere morsel.
Can you
Quench my parched soul?
Or, is your water
Too bitter
To behold.
There is but
One
Who will catch me.
There is
One
Who can satisfy me.
There is
One
and only
One
Who can quench me dry soul.
Who sees
With the unseen eye
There is
One
Who hears
The cry of my heart
There is
One
 Who calms my passions
Into quiet
Peace.
One
Jesus.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
