THE ATTIC ROOM: MOVING UP

Poem Commentary

just a goofy lil poem about growing up in a large family

THE ATTIC ROOM: MOVING UP

I remember when
I was a little girl
We had a bedroom
In our attic
The six of us
Had to wait in line
For our turn to have it

Dean got it first
He was the oldest
He painted everything black
Then Becky moved in
With all of her friends
And their countless clothes racks
Then came Dan
He held it longest
At least that's how it seemed
I didn't worry 'bout Cindy, or James
'Cause after Dan, was me

I loved that room
That coveted spot
Just underneath the roof
It meant I was the oldest one
When the last one flew the coop
I didn't realize
Til I was grown
Why they put a room up those stairs
It was because
The treads squeaked loudly
And the room was over theirs
They called it teen security
So they knew what was going on
All I know
Looking back on it now
All that climbing
Up and down
Made my legs, and memories strong

I always liked hearing that line from a mature woman.."I remember when I was a little girl"....I don't know why...I guess there is just this sweetness that shines through...Oh, this is a very special kind of poem...very nice....................gogant

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
