THE DELICATE SPACE BETWEEN TWO SOUL MATES

THE DELICATE SPACE BETWEEN TWO SOUL MATES

    Joseph J. Conte 05/29/2009

As two people become friends, a wide space exists,

They meet just by chance, in a conversation with twists.

Neither looks, age, nor intelligence, supports their new finds,

It's the brief stirring of brain cells, which stimulates their minds.

With time, many would say, its sex that draws them together,

Yet early on, sex would wear thin, like continuously bad weather.

These new friends are both fascinated, by the stories each tell,

Stories that awaken their brains, like the ringing of a church bell.

They speak to each other, sipping coffee, with a roll or some sweet,

Usually sitting at a round metal table, on a extremely hard seat.

When a lunch, replaces the coffee and cake, which in itself is splendid,

It permits two friends to speak longer, because the timeline is extended.

They sit and talk, about the problems that upset them that day,

Commiserating about scenarios, that will make them go away.

On several occasions, they each needed the support of a friend,

Both rose to the occasion, helping each other, to get round the bend.

They joined in lunch on their birthdays, toasting the future and the past,

Sat at holiday dinners, with home cooked delights, that made it a blast.

Somehow or someway, the climate turned cold, and the friendship got old,

The hot coffee turned cold, and even the rolls and the cakes, began to mold.

Friendships may begin to wane, when the friendships require too much time,

Or when stretches of boredom, cause friendships to slowly die on the vine.

It is worse when a friend turns into a soul mate, and the space decreases in size,

Comforting words of one mate, may be frightening, and begin the mate's demise.

The soul mate can apologize, and hope it will be acceptable, to the offended one,

Or a soul mate can cower, accept alienation, and dry up like a raisin, set in the sun.

Being a soul mate is a difficult task, caring, loving, and always spiritually there,

Keeping feelings contained, not spelling them out, will hurt, but shows that you care

The space between soul mates can be as broad as the ocean, or as narrow as a bend,

If the space widens, the wonders of a soul mate, will certainly change, to that of a friend.

This poem makes me take a deep sigh. At least in the end, they remain friends.

Good description on relationships and their many shades. Thank you.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
