~THE GIFT OF A STRANGER~

Late one winter's evening,
on a Donkey, Mary rode;
And except for Joseph's presence,
she felt so all alone.
~
Pregnant with the infant,
the Lord's begotten Son;
Mary said to Joseph,
"My labor has begun."
~
On their way to Bethlehem,
a Census they would take;
Mary looked at Joseph,
"I need somewhere to lay."
~
He held her small hand tightly,
"I'll try to find a place;
Where you will be more comfortable,
and it will ease your pain."
~
They came upon a city,
where Joseph did request;
"My wife is in full labor,
she needs a place to rest."
~
Because it was so crowded,
t'was no place at the Inn;
They could not seem to find,
a room in Bethlehem.
~
A kind woman approached them,
"I may know of somewhere;
That you can stay, while she gives birth,
I'll be right back, stay here."
~
She led them to a stable,
and made a bed of hay;
"Now rest", she said to Mary,
you'll need to save your strength."
~
T'was Jesus's first gift,
before He gave to us;
A kind and caring stranger,
who showed Him such great love.
~
Perhaps she was an Angel,
sent to help our Christ;
Joseph thanked her kindly,
as he comforted his wife.
~
So on this Christmas season,
let us not forget;
The kindness of a stranger,
in a town called Bethlehem.

Great insight into the story we've heard so many times before... how often this blessed woman is overlooked. Loved it!

Thank you so much. I appreciate your kind comments...hugz..Jillian

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
