    THE HEARD KILLER

The shadow that lurks among shadows we may have

Is not Satan or his demons

Or a figure in a black robe with a staff.

It is the fear of all fears of all men today.

Such a fear that disturbs him,

He could not admit to say.

It kills people by the millions and hurts hearts and souls.

It can bring a man down with a good day

And it can destroy all of his goals.

It can drive many of them to their deaths,

    Some of them never heard.

Humans ignore it and walk away

And say it is all absurd.

How can words kill a man?

How can words destroy his dreams?

Watch what they say and when they say

And it is not as hard as it seems.

    Words can cause wars;

    Sometimes kill me and you.

The next time you say words

    Think what they can do!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
