    The Open Chasm

You ask me why I’m happy,
    You wonder why I smile.
You tell me I am different,
    You’re curious all the while.

    You can’t understand why I don’t care,
About what people think of me.
You think that it means everything,
To have others control how you be.

You tell me I’m really weird,
Because I’m just not like you.
    You think I’m unaccepted,
But drama and I are through.

You can’t understand who I am,
    Since I’m different than you.
You judge me as if I’m nothing,
It’s like your mind never grew.

But I can tell you the difference between us,
The open chasm between happiness and mope.
Here is the thing you won’t understand:
    Unlike you, I have hope.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
