Wailing On The Wind

Poem Commentary

Every tribe of Native Americans suffered a form of the Trail of Tears.  Seen in history as savages, barely more than animals, few saw them as humans, with human feelings.

Wailing On The Wind

Do you hear their shuffling feet, through the freezing snow?
Do you see them falling to their knees, living a death so slow?

There beside the trail lies a very old man.
In his younger days he killed a grizzly with his bear hands.
Now all that he has left is an old buf'lo robe.
Gone is his happiness, gone is his hope.

Do you hear their shuffling feet, through the freezing snow?
Do you see them falling to their knees, living a death so slow?

Watch the warrior's heart as it begins to break.
In his arms lies his son, in a sleep from which he'll never wake.
As the last of the blood, from the tiny heart pours-
the warior knows he will fight, "Never, No more".

Do you hear their shuffling feet, through the freezing snow?
Do you see them falling to their knees, living a death so slow?

Kneeling in the snow is a woman with tears frozen upon her face.
She's had to watch the man she loves, drown in his disgrace.
And the infant that she holds so tight-
won't live to see daylight.

Do you hear their shuffling feet, through the freeing snow?
Do you see them falling to their knees, living a death so slow.
Do you hear their mournful cries upon the winter wind?
They are wailing for the ones they love- that will never walk this earth again.

this is great..brings tears to my eyes...because it is so true..great insight

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
