WHEN FLESH IS CALLING

Poem Commentary

Know that I am not talking about food I am talking about keeping from sin, I have to sacrifice and get rid of fleshly, worldy thoughts and desires because I want to live right for Christ.

WHEN FLESH IS CALLING

You call my name, you know it so well

             I HATE YOUR VOICE

the way you try to flatter me but in actuality

you're trying to fatten me for slaughter

I WAS YOUR SLAVE... FEEDING MY FLESH...

                        NOW....

I STARVE MYSELF AND YOU TO LIVE....

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
