Why Do You Rescue

Why Do You Rescue

Why do you rescue? Many people do ask
They are only horses, who cares about their past
The best thing you can do, is send them all to slaughter
No one will miss them, so why do you bother?

I will respond to this, without hesitation
The horses that I try to save need me in desperation.
It is not their fault, that they were treated this way.
So now it is my turn, to show them the way.

There is the old mare with sore legs, and way, way too thin
Who when she was younger, she was loved by all of them
But now that she is too old, to do her job real well
She was cast out into a field, to fend for herself.

Then there is the little fat pony, every little girls dream
Who was foundered and crippled from kindness, so it truly seems
With curled up toes and pain that shows, this pony is abandoned
For its owner did not know, the proper way to feed her.

Then you have the big horse, all built to work real hard
But his owner worked him, until he could work no more
Then he sent him off to slaughter, what a terrible end
For the hard working partner, who was not consider a friend

The beautiful Grey horse, all riddled with cancer
His owner forgot all the days that they wandered,
Across fields and trails and days journeys brought
But off to the kill pen he was sent without a thought

The line back dun horse, who was beaten to submission
Because he didn’t understand what his master was asking
With fear and hatred for humans embedded in his brain
He will never be able to see happiness, ever again

The little bay mare, all tattered and torn
From her old homes barn fire that left her alone
She is dumped off at an auction because of her scares
Emotional and physical, God help her move on.

These are just a few of them, all needing my assistance
All searching for freedom from abuse, and bad conditions
Tell me dear friend, Why do you ask and how can you look away
When all they need is one more chance, good food and a place to stay.

The horse is a glorious creature when given half the chance
It was never the fault of the creature, but the fault of a cold human heart
They do not ask for much at all, just a pat, some food, and a bed
But the humans they got stuck with forgot to do their part.

I know I can’t save all of them, but I will surely try
To help the ones who were sent to me, for a second chance in life
Now this is my explanation as to why I do what I chose
Please think it over and tell me, “is it not the right thing to do?”

Yes I did write this poem, it was about a few of the rescues I had and what their story was.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
