Worst Enemies

he wrestled trolls and slew dragons
claiming fame and glory as his price
until he came to the lair of the serpent
and his blood became ice
there was a hiss as warm air came from the dark abyss
he finally gathered his courage and his wits about him
as he swayed in place fighting the desperate urge to flee
as he moved towards the brim
he heard a ghastly hiss and a rasping voice calling his name
and it became to much for him to bear
he froze and then tried to flee
but he was already caught in that gloomy pit of despair
no matter how hard he tried to oppose and elude that evil grasp
he was sucked into that fearful embrace
and he came to face the creature in the cave
and found to his utter astonishment that it wore his face

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
