Broken Child/Broken Adult

Who can fix this broken child
Who can tame this animal wild
How can you make mental wounds heal
How do you distinuish what's fake and what's real

Children can hide in the most obvious places
So you can't see the pain written on teir faces
Physical wounds fade but the brain remains scarred
No child's life should ever be this hard

And now this child has become an adult
The pain has left him with a lifetime of doubt
All the physical wounds have long since healed
But the mental anguish is yet to be revealed

To admit being suicidal will cause more trouble
Leaving him burried beneath emotional rubble
Unable to think straight all thoughts are obscured
Even after years of treatment he still isn't cured

He lives his whole life trapped in a lie
Constantly depressed and wanting to die
He tries his hardest to do what is best
But constant failure won't let him rest

He's been programmed to feel only pain
An insidious virus infecting his brain
A disease that can't be fixed with a pill
A vicious cycle taking over his will

Suicide is an option he considers each day
But he has a hard time finding a way
To take his own life commiting the ultimate sin
He's playing a game that no one can ever win

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
