    DEAF EARS

    DEAF EARS

As the darkness falls around me
I think of all my broken dreams
The vacant shadows at my feet
    Leave only emptiness, it seems

Empty eyes that shine no more
    Pierced by an everlasting pain
The thunder roaring in my head
Robs me of blessed sleep again

Now I tremble under the weight
Of the problems that hold me down
When all my hopes begin to collapse
There seems to be no one around

All that gave me joy has perished
Leaving sadness to feed my fears
Down on my knees I desperately beg
But my pleas fall only on deaf ears

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
