    Poem Commentary

Before you call the suicide hotline, remember it's only a poem.

    DESPAIR

    DESPAIR

I'm not half the man that once was I
Looking in the mirror, I hate what I see
Wondering what terrible thing I have done
To make even God turn his back on me

No peace of mind is to be found this day
I laugh and smile so no one will know
I cry and I'm sad, all alone on the inside
On the outside I put on quite a show

Despair and hopelessness has finally won
I find myself in a state of confusion
Was there ever a time when I was happy
Or is that just some wishful illusion

No where to go with the rest of my life
As I sit writing a poem for no one to see
Please listen, God, then be just and kind
And send your Angel of Death after me

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
