    Dear John Letter

i sit impatiently at your door
you peek out now and then
    as if to tease me
we both know you'll never let me in

i could scream at the top of my lungs
i could attempt to stand and walk away
    but i sit here frozen
knowing i'll love you yet another day

    i've tried letting go
before i even tried to hold on
    i'm falling apart so quickly
    yet you stand as stone

i can take the pain, i promise
don't say what you think i want to hear
    your silence is deafening
    your answer already crystal clear

no more smiles through the curtains
mock no longer the way i feel
    tell me to fuck off
so i can begin to heal

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
