Father Time

Father Time

he puts on his robe
and starts his day
listening to cases
judgements he makes

a couple walks in
wanting divorce
property divided
with child support

he makes his decision
hands down his plan
custody is set
debt by demand

you cant argue
with what he rules
in his job
your just another fool

you work so much
to make ends meet
though life sucks
broke you will be

overtime becomes
your new lover
no time for romance
checks made of rubber

its your weekend
to have your child
a part time father
and youth gone wild

the debt you owe
takes time away
though love is not money
your gender will pay

you want to give them
your best in life
influence them well
and do them right

teach them things
that money cant buy
to see them smile
father time

to watch them grow
and get through school
to have good jobs
follow the rules

thanks to the judge
for ruining my plans
a soon to be grandpa
with callised hands

my son will appear
here in your court
my youth gone wild
paying child support

the cycle repeats
as morals decline
who's the deadbeat?
father time

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
