    Hope Floats

Seems the crumb that you threw me
    has done the unthinkable.
It has raised up my hopes
    I guess they're unsinkable.

    To keep them from rising
I've done my best, and you too have done much
    to assist in this quest.

You've pricked them and pierced them,
    cut them all open wide.
    I've lectured and counseled them,
    I've told them you lied.

    You've ignored them abandon them
    and shown them no care.
    I've buried them, smothered them
    and refused them more air

    Still it would seem,
no matter how hard I try,
    hope, unlike love,
    is unwilling to die..

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
