Tears

 So many and so varied
are the tears that we will know,
born of joys and of pain buried,
as we learn and as we grow.

When still we are so very young
we don’t think to hide our pain,
when in some hurtful way we’re stung,
our tears we let fall like the rain.

But the years they move ever faster,
and we hold what we're feeling inside;
the result? An exquisite disaster,
built upon, of all things, foolish pride
.

Tears that sparkle clear, tasting so sweet,
born of love, come at times of elation.
Milestones of life, valued goals we work to meet,
wedding day, dreams come true, life's creation.

Tears that taste bitter, out of pain have been cast.
Broken trust, love's betrayal, only nightmares prevail;
locked inside, private hell, dark memories so vast;
replaying  life’s sorrows in tearful detail.

Looking back at it all in our much later years;
pray thee safe in true love’s arms, finally found.
Grant this one wish, that weary eyes cry sweetest tears
and rattling chains of past betrayal make not a sound;
.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
