O for the Fortunate Ones

Poem Commentary

Meant to be a performance poem - when spoken, I was thinking it should crescendo until almost a battle cry at the end, and then come back down on the final word. I wasn't quite sure how to convey this by sight, but hopefully the rhythm and spacing of the words and lines will be enough to portray the feeling I intended.

O for the Fortunate Ones

O for the fortunate ones
that sweat in beads of mercy
and walk unencumbered
through paths of dappled sunlight
those lucky sons of fathers
bestowed with the gift of silver speech
to call out the demons of human nature
or weave ribbons of sweeping praise
O, Oh now for the times of times
of times when footsteps echoed under hills
over mountains in the breast of fire and freedom
when men of men were faultless angels
and strode in chambers of solace and silence and glory
glory like Olympus rising from cumulus clouds
glory like the fife and drum of immortalized battle
O for the fortunate glory of Death and blood and
mercy
