    The Watchmen Watch

The watchmen watch the walls, their hearts at ease,
No sound comes forth but the jingle of keys,
And naught goes on, or so the watchman sees.
The breaking booms of beating drums aren't heard,
For every night before, nothing occurred,
And something now would only be absurd.
The wild winds of war go howling by,
Unheard by soldiers - sleeping when they die,
"To arms! To arms!" now comes the frantic cry.
But bright blood bursts from unsuspecting men,
Who laughed and joked just hours before then,
They lie slain, dead amongst all of their friends.
New watchmen watch the walls now, hearts at ease,
And naught goes on, or so the watchman sees.

I really really like this. You managed to keep a rhyme scheme that doesn't sound forced, which is impressive. The message is very strong as well and is backed by some very nice images. I love this. I hope you keep writing!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
