    Poem Commentary

Does this have any redeeming social value?

    On Dogs

    On Dogs
    Our dogs we love.
We see them as loyal companions,
    even family members.
    We observe their emotions:
    happy, sad, enthusiastic, tired.
We imagine what they are thinking.
They must think like us, we think.
    We credit them with intelligence
and imagine them knowing our thoughts.
But try to converse with them and all they’ll reply is
    “Bark, bark, bark, bark, bark.”

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.
