Poem Commentary

It takes two to make a relationship work and only one to make life a living hell for another when unhappy. In the family courts children and men are left to the whim of a mothers activity. The last time I saw my son he was being dragged away in tears whilst social workers could only stand by and apologise.... neither gentle or fair, more hateful and nasty because I should stand up and say enough is enough... Generalisation creates unhealthy stereotypes...

One Candle and A Shoe

In the modern world of two thousand and ten

Boys are growing up not knowing how to be men

Boys are forced to divorce fathers

Instead of mothers divorcing ex’s

By pouring spite into little boy’s heads with evil words and hexes

“I’ve seen the back of him” she says

And “you don’t need a dad”

“You’re going to be your mummy’s boy”

“A good little lad”

“You’re going to treat girls the way I think a man really should”

“And do all the touchy feely things your dad never could”

“I am going to teach you what I think a man should be”

Meaning that apart from the heels you are going to be just like me

So despite all the pain and suffering she has had to endure

A confused boy will grow and dance to the same soul destroying score

So after years of family feuding and reading all the files

The judge makes a decision for which he won’t invite replies

Mum is too distressed he says,

After many years in court

Father’s application declined

The struggle for contact all for naught

A Father’s love so ardent now lost in a report

Reduced to the role of stalker

Hoping not to get caught

Clinging more to hope that his son’s love won’t disappear

He finds a way to stay true and leave a pathway that is clear

Though the light shines low its spirit dazzles shining bright

That is the candle set in the window which he lights each night

Alongside the candle is set a little red shoe

To remind them of the love they shared and of what together they used to do

I can't say I like this poem, as how can you like anothers pain, I can't say this is a beautiful poem, as how can anothers sadness be beautiful, all I can say, is this is a very moving piece, that reflects the emotion of a loving father... Well written my friend

Hi Teardrops, I am a fighter by nature, but the court system is such that you can only go so far. A judge thinks it was fine for contact not to be attended and was offended by the social workers who lodged a written statement of concern about what was going on. After that, like any fight, patience and hope prevail to carry you through...they must because what else is there?

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
