Sailing Beside Me

Poem Commentary

This is in tribute to a very dear friend of mine, whom I loved and never told how I truly felt. I lost my chance for that after the accident that killed him. After his death, I began to write poetry, and I would say that his death triggered my unknown passion for writing that I didn't know I had. Gary I will never forget you. You were the early morning rays of the sun shining through my window, waking me gently to the dawning of a new day. You brought to light my abilities and my passions. I love you and miss you always.

Sailing Beside Me

Here I sit and dream,
Of things that weren't meant to be.
Things I wanted that came,
With the bitter cost of endless pain.
You were one of those things,
And were ever present in my dreams.
I never wanted to lose you,
But I never got to choose.
For Fate snatched you away,
Never to be seen again by the light of day.
So young you were when you passed,
Never to sail again before the mast.
My feelings for you, I never told,
While you were still a living soul.
To the sea, now that chance is lost,
Between the waves, to be forever tossed.
In the day, I think of you, as I sail upon the sea,
Yet by night, you are there in my sea of dreams,
Sailing beside me.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
