    The Child Who Could Fly

When I was a child I had wings
I had the power to unlock my feet from the floor
    Anyplace I could imagine
the world was mine to explore

I remember flying over the ocean
    fingertips just above the waves
    The dolphins leaping all around
    singing their songs of praise

I would soar high over mountains
and dive down into the valleys below
    Then up above the clouds
to the edge of space I would go

I could fly back through time
    way back before man
    I would watch in amazement
at the dinosaurs roaming the land

    There were no limits
to the things I could see
There were no limits to the places
     my wings could carry me

    But as I grew up
and there was much more to do
    I wouldn't fly as much
or so far as I used to

    So as time passed by
    my wings became weak
    And slowly but surely
    their size began to shrink

I'm older now and wiser now
    my wings have died away
    I guess it's ok though
I wouldn't have time to use them anyway

wow, i feel like you just walked me through "imagination/hopes" depression through out a persons life. ignorance truly is bliss. the less we know the more free our minds can be. -jessica

Such a youthful imagination that we all once shared and too soared above the clouds. But as we grow older our third eye closes, for some to see no more (how sad). But for the artist, poet, writer, spiritualist, inventor and composer; it is a bright and open window to creativity.

Actually, I don't like this, I LOVE this. With the child-like enthusiasm of memory tempered by the subtle maturing of growing up, you've captured so much with so few words. By the way, there is an obscure rule in English usage that says a positive comparison is as/ as, but a negative comparison is so/ as, which means your "as" in the ninth line from the end should really be "so". Also, I have to disagree with Chaos in that I don't think we as adults really hate the children we once were. I think, along with the rest of the world, I'm sure, that we remain wistfully jealous of those early days. I wonder how many grown men saved their capes from yesteryear? I wish I had. There might be some hope had I done so.

I'm glad you like this one. It is one of my personal favorites. Also thx for the heads-up on the "as/so" thing. I will make the correction. Is it jealousness, hatred, or is it personal envy that we feel towards youth. No matter which, there is something that cannot be denied when we look back at youth. We miss it. Thanks for the read

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
