    Hostage

    In the beginning
the future was all I saw
    giving my life
    a true destination

A place that was so far
    beyond my reach
    still I departed
    without hesitation

    Never once foreseeing
    when the ship set sail
    that I'd end up
at the bottom of the sea

    lost, alone
    and hoping for rescue
    amid the wreckage
    of fabricated destiny

    I've waited so long
    to see the magical spirit
    that once flew
    across the sky

    Now a victim
    of it's own creation
    it has lost
    the ability to fly

    I climbed atop
    the mountain of change
    looking at this world
    that spans so far

    Hope in my heart
    reality under my feet
    eyes still fixed
    upon the stars

    Leaping from the edge
    I sold for ransom
    all I ever was,
    and all I could be

    In one last
    desperate attempt
    to release the hostage held
    within me

A magnificent and penetrating description of the exact position that is occupied by most of us who insist upon acknowledging the changes wrought by time's evolution on our naivety. Excellent work, Artie

I remember this piece...I loved then, and still do! Really incredible poem! Excellent and on my list now! Thanks!

Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.
