    Torn between emotions

    It is not with sadness
    that I sit; but despair.
    It is not with happiness
    that I sit, but elation.

    Torn between emotions;
    this heart that is mine.
    Torn between emotions;
    is that all my life will be?

    These extremes of emotions
    cloak themselves in anger.
    To feel them without anger
    is to die a violent death.

    Anger filters these feelings
    allowing their power to diminish.
    For either extreme is to
    much for one heart.

    The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

    Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
