    Toy Soldier

    Toy Soldier

Once upon life a newborn cries
One of many more unborn cries
Beckoned to life by a sorry midwife
Welcomed to life, welcomed to strife

Born a chess piece he's in a game
Born a pawn tamed and lame
The players dictate he must go
They're up above and down below

    He's a warrior in a won war
His sweat and blood soak the earth's core
He'll say I do like soldiers do
His commander is one of two

He has sprung from a failed thesis
    The accident at Genesis
Now he's vassal to a vision
    The grand goal, the revelation.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

    T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
