    Twilight Fantasies

    When sleep comes at last
when we have both have had our fill
    then
    and only
    then
    might I
    think of
    what might be
    could be
    think of the joy
    of the pleasure
    of you
    I lived before you
    I do not know how

    In those moments
    in our after glow
    while we lay there tangled

    lifetimes play in my head
    like a dozen different movies
    cut together
    racing by at highest speed

    I live them in turn
    savoring the flavor
    of us
    as we defy time
    ignore logic
    and laugh at a world
    that can not hold us

    The warmth of your words
on the nape of my neck
    sears then saves me
    though not from myself
as I may never break free
    of the fairy tale
    the fantasy
    the wasted wishes
    which destroy and define me
    Contrive to control me
and at the end of my day
    are my only other love
    the thief
    who steals me
    from you
    who has stolen
    all my days
    but who will never
    steal last night
    from us

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
