~A Carol For The Night ~

It was the night before Halloween and all through the house . . .

every creature was stirring, every spirit was out!-

Ranting and raving causing all kinds of torment!

As lightning they moved-- and great fears they lent!

That is-- except for a. . .Mouse-- He sat covering his eyes with his ears

beneath the third step of the living room stairs

while the storm outside wailed and the lightning flashed!

    warning of incoming hail.

He had to move now -He had to move quickly!

for he had but one chance for the dining room chimney!

Once there he could hide neath some embers of wood

and dream of better days like Christmas- He could!

He looked about seeing everything in place , so he took a chance

    he started with haste.

. He darted from one room quite well

except for the CAT sitting slashing it's tail!

He couldn't see him for all his fright!

and ran into Cat's lap with all his might

" Well hello there little Mouse " said Cat with surprise . .

Mouse only answered with terror filled eyes.
. ." Oh my" said Cat " you have no reason to fear

You're safe with me, use my paws for a chair!

This is my kitchen, welcome to dinner

Mouse for once wished he were thinner!

Mouse began to think as hard as he could

what could he do to change this Cat's Mood?.

    Peeking above cats ugly paws,

He spotted a vase on the mantle, because

He knew, to escape-he must be clever

the grip of the cat must first be severed

nipping the whiskers -and off in a flash

down came the vase with a powerful crash

    To Cat's poor despair

the Vase landed perfectly into his chair. . . .

Mouse Slipped through A hole in the window and out in the rain

finding a Mushroom He laid down to dream

snuggled down he dreamed- Not of Cat nor Spirits

    or halloween

but of christmas, and cookies , and very small things!
