    Daughters of Lysistrata

    Daughters of Lysistrata
    --Phread

    Hear me, O
    daughters of Lysistrata.
    All you who wish to
    end these endless
    Peloponnesian wars.

I refuse to assign God a gender!
I refuse to believe there is only one!
    Monotheism created most of
    the problems in our world
    and let chaos reign.

Who said you can’t be a God
if you can’t pee standing up?
Who says you can’t be a God
if you can’t write your name
    in the snow or splatter
    some wall or pole
    like a dog?

    Who says?
Who gets to make all the rules?
    And why?

The world ran so much better
    when the priestesses
    were in charge… before
    men screwed it all up
    with their egos and greed
    and their incessant need
    to dominate everything
    and everyone, thinking
    they knew better.

    And women just smile
    wisely through their
    tears and pain,
    suffering
    until we idiots finally
    figure it out.

    Modern viragos,
    don’t wait!
    Don’t wait, ladies,
    don’t wait!
    Our world can’t afford
    to wait.

    Ye daughters of Lysistrata
    women of Athens,
    band together
    withhold sex
    withhold love
    until your men
    end their wars…

    Emerge and fight
    once more, Viragos,
    save us from
    ourselves...

I like this a lot. Is it because I'm a woman? Man is destined to destroy himself and I wish I didn't believe that. Sally

Thanks for writing... I worry about that, too!

We do need saving from ourselves, but there are those who are more likely to destroy us than others. And I know some women who can be very destructive of their men and themselves. The place to start is within your own heart. Still, it was a beautiful poem with a message for the ages. Thanks for sharing it with us Phread. I look forward to reading more of your postings.

Thanks for your kind words, Tom!

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
