Poem Commentary

A kid from a less than well to do family leaves high school with few options; either take to the streets or see a recruiter... He takes the recruiter option, and gets talked into being all he can be, or at least all he can dream of what he can be from what he's being told by the recuiter who hands him a pen (swings the gate of hell) and gets his john hancock on the form to sign his life away to the green adrenaline... rude awakening, boot camp, an all night flight overseas to the land of peoples who don't like us very much, rude awakening again, they shoot at him and bomb his buddies, he thought he was there to help, but learns he's just doing a stretch of his life with no real or meaningful end to it that he can tell... He just wants to get through it, and get back home... This is a kick butt rock song in reality, but here... Just a story in rhyme to read... Hope you enjoy it...

I give you,

Eighteen Rush....

Eighteen Rush

Eighteen Rush (c)
D Jackson, 081403

Lookin out my window
Rain’s a pourin down
Somethin’s callin me to go
Scream without a sound
Corner 42nd Avenue
A man with steel black eyes
And, a pocket full of angel news
He's helpin me decide

He smiles at wide-eyed strangers
Swings the gate of hell
Ain't no price on danger
When your soul's for sale
I feel the rush a comin
Make it all worth while
Leavin here's why I'm goin
And, I'd run that whole last mile

Tired they all keep sayin
That I'm just no good
I got nothin from the prayin
Like they said I would
Now, I own every bit of me
And, maybe that's too much
But, I’ll ride the rush, just to see
All that they can't touch

Eighteen years eternity
It’s plenty time to know
All the things been pushin me
To the rush, I go
Don't know where it's takin me
But, I just don't care
The rush is where I gotta be
‘Cause there’s nothin left back here

Eighteen weeks eternity
And, it's gotta show
Awe, they just kept pushin me
Now, I'm ready to go
Just heard where they're takin us
And, it's over there
But, it's why we all bought the rush
Now, the load we got to bear

Eighteen hours eternity
Through the black night sky
Noone here's gonna sleep
Thinkin they might die
"On your feet, let's move out
There's things we got to save
Stow the whine and pity pout
for the party at your grave!"

Eighteen days eternity
On the side of right
Never sure who it's gonna be
Takes a shot tonight
Who are all these people
Looking with disgust
Sure don’t seem very grateful
‘Cause they just keep killin us

Eighteen months eternity
And, we're still not done
Only came here to set 'em free
But, it just keeps on
Not sure free is what they know
Or, ever understand
But, I sure know now that we gotta go
Get the hell out of this land

"We gotta go..."
"We gotta get outta here..."
"Hey Charlie..."
"Man keep your head down..."
"I mean it brother..."
"I wanna see you back home..."
"On American ground..."
"Standin' up brother..."
"Not lyin' down..."

Powerful words . . . . in the comfort & safety of home - i often find myself shedding tears for the souls that are lost / changed / mangled and destroyed by war so many leave as boys - come back as men . . . . surely they will never be the same again . . . . somewhere in the chaos of war - innocence is destroyed . . . so many finding themselves lost in the void . . . . your song tells a story that has been lived by so many . .. thank you for sharing!! ~gypsy~

Thank you for such a poetic response gypsy... and, you're que on as well... I wrote that piece quite a while ago, at the time when Desert Storm was still fresh in people's minds... Seeing the endless stream of news snippets of the aftermath of that war, and the sad stories pouring in of our kids being targeted by the very people we went there to save, made me mad about it all... I remembered myself and my friends, Vietnam, the recruiters back then, their bill of goods they were selling us to sign on... Times might be different now for the Middle East wars and affairs, but war is the still the same, and getting kids to buy into getting involved in it, is still the same... Glad you saw the irony in that piece... Doug

This is beautiful laydbak, and it has special meaning to me, my Uncle was drafted to Vietnam, but came home 'lyin' down'. So many souls lost in the fight for 'Freedom'. Great write

Thanks Spence... I lost some from my HS class in 'Nam and, knew several others who lost close ones too in that chaos... The time, the war, the 'events' surrounding might change, but war is still war... It's ugly, and the ones who either get convinced, or convince themselves to be in it, suffer the extreme mental and physical torments that come with it... Their own hearts and minds never forget how bad it was, if... they make it through alive... Thanks for the kind words... Doug

Thank you so much melki...

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
