Into the Night

Into the Night

Into the night, I close my eyes and fear sleep.

The terror never goes away,
Forgiven but never forgotten was the man
who stole my innocence from me that day.

Into the night, I attempt to not dream, the terror over.
I lay awake and weep.
He has such power, I have left the memory behind,
but it always comes back when I fall asleep.

He is dead and gone from me
at least in my mind,
However when darkness falls, it is his voice that calls.
Wakes me from my slumber, and my heart does bind.

Unable to escape, sometimes I fear I'll never rid myself
of the pain he caused; more than 20 yrs have gone by.
Yet he still wakes me filled with fear, shame and regret.
I swear not another tear will I cry.

Into the Night,
darkness falls,
Will I make it through
or will his voice again be what calls?

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
