July2006—Hinc illae lacrimae
How does one grieve for Who is lost?
Crushing, quietly,
the words disappear.
And then some Thing behind tired eyes
breaks, prickles, as
sight becomes unclear.
Sorrow-stricken, a stale-mate made
unbearable,
these thoughts become
a jolly boat to carry us
through thought-made Storm
to a thoughtless Sun.
Because It meant so much to us-
because it did,
because it will-
because something, Someone is now
removed from life,
from This life, still
we try to reconcile, with faith,
with memories,
with frivolous tears
the loss of such a steadfast light
within our life
that burned for years,
and is no more. How does one grieve?
How does one breathe
and bear, ever so,
the cutting Sadness, deeply struck,
quietly buried--
I do not know.
Crushing, quietly,
the words disappear.
And then some Thing behind tired eyes
breaks, prickles, as
sight becomes unclear.
Sorrow-stricken, a stale-mate made
unbearable,
these thoughts become
a jolly boat to carry us
through thought-made Storm
to a thoughtless Sun.
Because It meant so much to us-
because it did,
because it will-
because something, Someone is now
removed from life,
from This life, still
we try to reconcile, with faith,
with memories,
with frivolous tears
the loss of such a steadfast light
within our life
that burned for years,
and is no more. How does one grieve?
How does one breathe
and bear, ever so,
the cutting Sadness, deeply struck,
quietly buried--
I do not know.
