Learing to Let Go (7/26/2007)
You took my hand
When I was 2
I was going to slip and fall
You said "I never want anything to happen to you,"
You held me close
When I was 13
Had my first heartache
You gave me a hug and said "See what happens when you like boys?"
You comforted me
As I was getting older
We talked about the rights and wrongs
You left saying "My shoulder is yours to lean on."
But when it is time for me to stop leaning on your shoulder
A father starts to realize
How hard it is to let go
When I was 2
I was going to slip and fall
You said "I never want anything to happen to you,"
You held me close
When I was 13
Had my first heartache
You gave me a hug and said "See what happens when you like boys?"
You comforted me
As I was getting older
We talked about the rights and wrongs
You left saying "My shoulder is yours to lean on."
But when it is time for me to stop leaning on your shoulder
A father starts to realize
How hard it is to let go
