Lovely Soul

  • Poetry will always emerge out of the shadows of depression, shining like a star in the scarcity of light.

Poem Commentary

i was inspired to write this by the recent death of my grandfather....this is dedicated to him.

Lovely Soul

His heart no longer beats

The blood just sits in his veins

It no longer moves

And his body is cold

I will never feel the warmth of his hug again

As I held his hand,

A tear fell onto his arm,

And it dribbled down to his elbow

For some reason I thought

Something would happen

That maybe my stupid little tear

Would revive him

It just fell onto the bed,

Making a dark spot on the sheet

My eyes felt like they were burning

And my throat tightened up

It was like my breath was sucked

Away with his life

His hand loosened its grip

Until it fell out of mine

An uncontainable sob tore up my throat

I leaned over on his body

And I couldn’t feel his chest move

But then I felt a pat on my shoulder

I didn’t want anybody to comfort me

But when I turned around to make them leave,

I saw the person that I wanted to see

He stood there

With his lips twisted into a little smile

And he wound his arms around my waist

He felt warm

He felt alive

And his lovely soul

Faded away into the wall

As he said “I love you”

Although I just couldn’t help but cry

Very moving. You capture the moment and all the nuances so well. You put the words in clipped groups like small snapshots of the scene. I felt this in my soul.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA
