    "And A Sword If Needed"

    They speak so highly
    When you stayed silent
    Against men's violent accusations-
    You are called the Lamb
    Offered to be slaughtered.
Oh, how I honor what courage
    That deed did take!
But, Lord, I don't need a lamb today.
My heart is struck at every turn-
My lips sealed shut by angry men.
My faith is offered to the masses
As a joke to revel in. So, you see,
My Savior, I don't need a lamb today.

Divine Fire, take up Your sword!
Lift your arm to defend me.
The life is fading from my eyes,
But you can restore what is stolen.
You, Lord, are a lamb; but today
    I need a lion.
Dear Lord, do this for my sake.
Strike these chains and set me free....
You have granted me joy of all joys,
    You've given me peace,
Love has flowed through these veins
And hope has abounded in my heart,
But, God, today I need a sword.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
