    Regret

    a tendril of smoke
    curls upward
    from the newly lit cigarette
    between her fingers,
a shudder ripples through her body
    as she takes another drag.
    the wind stirs
    restlessly
    for a moment
    before settling into its former
    hushed stillness.
    she brushes her hair
    from her face
    and looks across the street
    to the couple
    kissing
    beneath the halo
    from the street-lamp.
    she smiles sadly
    to herself
    and regrets
    having dumped
    her boyfriend.
    she puts her cigarette out
with the heel of her shoe
    and continues walking
    through the midnight shadows
    of that warm
    summer
    night.

What I want to know is, where is the beginning and the end of this story? It read like the narrative of a film noir. You could reaaly make an entire story with this, well done.

yep, that's all of it. some of my favorite poems describe only a moment of time, or an emotion that soon faded...

Very good imagery. You've created the feelings of regret and melancholy for the reader.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
