    Tell Them, He Said

    Someone knocked upon my window,
Awoke me from a morning dream.
Gently whispered, "Tell them, will you?"
    Suddenly I began to scream.

"Tell them I died and returned from heaven
Though it wasn't like I thought
    There were seldom reasons given
For doing the things we ought.

There were no books to read there
And we floated around in space
We seldom found a shelf of care
    None had a face.

I thought you might wonder why I left you
    And I wanted to explain.
    To begin our life anew
    To see you smile again.

You see, a friend of mine was famous
And needed someone to take the blame
    Then I volunteered for heaven
So he could keep his fame.

His voice was like mine, although younger,
    His hair was prematurely grey
He never knew a day of hunger
And lived among castles near the Bay.

Until an earthquake shook him strongly
Took way his house and car
    Then somehow, right or wrongly,
    He heard voices from afar.

    Coming closer through mistly twilight
    Saying he should make amends
For his crimes and set things right
There is a limit among friends.
