    The Face in the Mirror

    Face in the reflection,
    Please tell me the perfection
Is the same as it was many years ago.

    You cannot see my wrinkles
    You compliment my dimples.
    And when I smile,
    You wave to me hello.

    You turn into a moonbeam,
A sunset and a lilting stream.
You agree with what I say
    And nod agreement.

    You resolve a situation,
You are the reflection of creation.
    When we disagree,
You know exactly what we meant.

I may not think to thank you.
If I did, you might be surprised.
I know you would turn my appreciation
    Into a beautiful sunrise.

    To show my appreciation
    For your wonderful creation,
I will climb to a low mountain
    And shout your praise.

So you may see me in a moonbeam,
Or in a reflection in a quiet stream,
Or in a sudden, glorious, unexpected place.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
