THE DOLL ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE
A fresh cut tree by the window stood,
Paper circles strung in strands.
Silver tinsel dripped in every space,
Each hung by tiny hands.
Six little girls, brown hair, brown eyes.
Sat starring at the tree.
The lights were lit, their faces glowed
Christmas Eve had come to be.
A baby doll sat in the tree
With a note that hung below.
We knew the messsage that it held,
We'd seen that note before
She stood beside the tree with pride,
Our loving caring Mother.
We have a special gift for you
Next month you'll have a brother.
Baby Freddy was his name
Just like in years before.
Five times I've heard these promised words
And now they're here once more.
Baby Freddy died long years ago
He was the very first.
Six girls followed, over the years
But this year was the worst.
I knew my mother was not well
This child would be her last.
She longed to give my Dad a son
And wipe away the past.
When Christmas lights were dim and gone
And the tree was laid to rest,
A little girl with dark brown eyes
Was born and we were blessed.
Mom never had another child,
We were cherished, one to seven.
Our Christmas special yet to see
Baby Freddy up in Heaven
