The Secret Night
The still, dark night,
One sound alone,
Feathers ruffle as,
An owl takes flight.
One by one,
Our minds distracted by dreams,
No one to appreciate,
This dark mystery.
I hear a light flick off,
I hear a snake slither by,
I hear a raccoon scurry up,
A tree towering the sky.
And now unfolds,
The greatest story of all,
What happens while
We are sound asleep?
A cricket chirps its song,
Tells all about,
Its adventure with,
A lightning bug.
Fireflies brighten the sky,
Shed light upon,
Our path in life.
I take a deep breath,
Trying to suck it all in,
A magical beauty from within.
But I feel its wrong,
Like it’s not my choice,
And I am an intruder
To their privacy.
But still it quenches,
My thirst for knowledge,
My curiosity,
Finally satiated.
I learn all about,
What really matters,
What’s important,
What life’s about.
In this one night,
Watching critters,
So innocent,
So helpless.
But soon its gone,
The sun’s back up,
As it penetrates,
The silent night.
And deep down inside,
There’s a pleasure of knowing,
Such a secret,
With this wonderful night.
Good morning!
We’re back to real life.
