Upon a Sudden

Upon a sudden I hear a scream
Mind melting agony echoing in my dream
I see an empire of corpses hung
In the streets everywhere their dead eyes stung

Upon an instant I wake in dread
The crimson eyes of the demon mine meet in my bed
An ungodly hour for an ungodly malice
It reaches out makes an offer "Please drink of my chalice."

Upon a sudden I find the crimson drink
Coating my lips as soap coats a sink
Congealing the darkness this demon did bring
Inside my soul my heart and my mind it did string

Upon an instant I share the demons dorm
A resident of devious death well beyond the norm
Not denying the creativity I put into the horror I now wraught
With the drink of doom I so long ago bought

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
