    Poem Commentary

A poem written about the Civil War in El Salvador that cost many lives and the lessons we learn throughout the passage of that frightful 12 years.

    “The Drum beats of War”

The drum beats of war have plagued my country for years

The drum beats of war have seen its share of blood, sweat, and tears

Innocent children trained to kill an early age

Falling victim to genocide is only the first stage

Mothers crying out to their sons to only hear their own echo

An empty room with no roof is also ningun techo

    Ammunition is their only ambition

With no repercussions has become their tradition

Abuse of power and authority by our government has reached a fever pitch

The people have risen up and bearing arms to equip against the evil witch

Armies against guerilla warfare will never led to peace only destruction

If you choose to remain silent about social injustices
You’re a mere puppet of reconstruction

Speaking the truth is now a revolutionary act of love, pain and sorrow

Rest in peace to the countless of heroines who died before they could see tomorrow

Only in death do we realize things after their done

Watch over the mother’s, fathers and obviously their sons

A 12 year war that saw approximately 75,000 causalities

Let us never repeat a horror that has no remedies

Monsenor romero spoke uncanny of the injustices that occurred during the war

Many tuned in to listen via radio especially the poor

In March of 1980 that voice was silenced with a political tool called violence

Let us never waver during times of unyielding pressure

I assure you we will reach the promise land like a hidden treasure

Hundreds of thousands fled to Honduras to secure a future for their own

Once they arrived they knew it would be tough to turn a house into a happy home

The drum beats of war is a culmination of a 12 year odyssey

Take off the shutters from beneath your eyes and you will clearly see

That strength and hope is what kept my family from falling victim to a similar fate

Now I’m fortunate enough to tell you, you can also succeed because it’s never to late

In a world where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer

The transfer of power always shifts to the villains of horror

Criminal minded, belligerent tyrants rule the earth

Terminating a pregnancy to prevent birth is not what it’s worth

The resources third world nations have acquired is enough to feed the hungry

So do not tell me that an evil spirit has spread amongst me

Pestilence and famine has become a reoccurring theme

God can you save us from this nefarious scheme?

Revolutionaries run through my family tree similar to roots

Engaged in an endless struggle for freedom while evading men in black suits

Either we exhaust all options and die for what we believe in

Or remain stagnant on issues that matter which would be the biggest sin

In the end lives are lost and villages and towns are never found

Concrete jungles with dead bodies are seen as I walk around

It’s interesting how atrocities can change your entire destiny

So all I want for you to do is just smile for me

We are a living testament of survival one can only dream

Trust no one because things are not always what it seems

Hand me your hand if you are willing to unclench your fist

Give me a hug if you wish to uncross your arms who can resist?

Lay your head on my shoulder when it seems hard to keep your head up

Love conquers evil so always remember to never let up

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
