Black and Proud

Black and Proud

How far have we courageously come
from slave ships to scary seas of endless cotton
quick hissing whips whisper a loud welcome
from leprous clay footed gods in black buttons

How far have we bravely fought
from foreign battle fields to our own lawns
where many fine brothers fell and were caught
in mute graves they lie still to senseless puns

How much have we sadly lost so far
a black heritage fading at each new dawn
Africa stands bereaved for her stolen stars
twinkling in bleak heavens gazed upon by none

What did we so dearly gain in all this
a strong heart beating with nagging questions
an energy pulsing without rest, sleep or peace
searching for answers we dare not mention

Alas we have come quite far indeed
walking tall in strengths of fathers unknown
loving deeper than racial lines for those in need
living by ancient rules not spoken but shown

Tender shoots from old roots will soon unveil
black pride our glorious stars, I humbly hail !

At times we feel an ancient connection to our roots in our struggle to aspire higher, to achieve the perfection of our individuality in life and to those who are doing a good job at being Black and making they rest of us proud I dedicate this poem to you.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
